Deputy Commissioner of Community Affairs:
Mark T. Stewart

Deputy Commissioner Mark Stewart was appointed to bridge the gap between the NYPD and the community in the Community Affairs Bureau. DC Stewart will work with community leaders and members to identify needs that will help contribute to a safer and productive community. DC Stewart will focus on areas in the City that demonstrate the need for outreach, while also providing support for those areas that may be flourishing through previous advocacy. The Community Affairs Bureau oversees 4 divisions; Community Outreach, Crime Prevention, Youth Strategies and School Safety. With the help of these 4 divisions, DC Stewart will build and maintain programs and activities that will have a positive impact on the community.

Deputy Commissioner Stewart previously served as the Coordinating Supervising Rackets Investigator for the New York County District Attorney’s Violent Criminal Enterprise Unit from June 2010 – Feb 2022. DC Stewart assisted in the investigation of prosecuting violent gangs and firearms traffickers. Prior to DC Stewart being promoted to Coordinating Supervisor, he was a Senior Rackets Investigator from April 2006 – June 2010 in the Central Investigations Unit.

Prior to joining the New York County District Attorney’s Office, DC Stewart worked with the NYPD as a Transit Police Officer from July 1984 – November 1988. He was then promoted to 3rd Grade Detective in November 1998 where he was assigned to Transit’s Major Case Squad and then to 2nd Grade Detective in December 2000 where he was assigned to the 6th Precinct Detective Squad. DC Stewart then retired from the NYPD in 2004. Deputy Commissioner Stewart has 2 daughters, Tiphany (40) and Brittaney (29) and has been married to his wife Lorraine for 31 years.
