Mission Statement

Keith L. Williams was born on November 20, 1954, in Jamaica, New York. Throughout his adult life, Keith played an active role in his community, especially among the youth. He believed caring and providing for young people was one of the best ways: most notably through “Keith’s Roundball Classics,” the annual basketball tournament he held in Liberty Park (now Detective Keith Williams Park), and through his sponsorship of an afterschool program at Public School 116, which has since been renamed after his uncle, the late, William C. Hugley. Keith enjoyed a special relationship with our youngsters, many of whom instinctively believed him and his message. In many ways, Keith embodied the spirit of our youth, while at the same time holding out the promise of what they could be if they worked hard and sacrificed. After all, Keith himself was truly a home-grown product.

Keith attended Jamaica High School from 1968-1971, where he was a star player for the varsity basketball team. After graduating high school, he attended Long Island University (Brooklyn Campus) on an athletic scholarship. A few years later, Keith begin working for the New York City Department of Corrections until his appointment to the Police Academy on July 13, 1981. He successfully completed several assignments in NYPD before being promoted to Third Grade Detective on September 28, 1987. Five months later, Keith was transferred to the Queens District Attorney’s Squad.

On November 13, 1989, Detective Williams was killed in the line of duty along with his partner Richard Guerzon, while transporting a prisoner to Rikers Island Correctional Facility. This was truly a sad and tragic moment; however, his spirit and legacy live through Detective Keith L. Williams Memorial Charitable Fund Inc., under the courageous guidance of his daughter, Tennille Williams. The organization plans to provide academic scholarships to deserving students of various ages throughout New York City’s Public Schools System. Most importantly, one of its short-term goals is to open the doors to The Detective Keith L Williams Recreation Clinic, a community center built to provide a nurturing learning environment for young children and teenagers. During Keith’s eight years of service with the police department, he received two Excellent Police Duty Citations. On June 7, 1990, Keith was awarded posthumously with the Medal of Valor, the Police Department’s highest award. Yet undoubtedly, the greatest honor Keith can receive would be for all of us to continue working to fulfill his mission of building a bright future for our youngsters and giving them the opportunity to be their very best. Bestowing this honor upon Keith remains our greatest challenge.
